A tidy workshop is a productive workshop. When you know exactly where your 6mm chisel or that box of 40mm screws lives, you spend less time searching and more time making. Good storage also protects your tools from rust, damage and the dreaded 'where did I put that?' moment. Here's how to organise your workshop so it works as hard as you do.

Start with a Clear-Out and a Plan

Before you buy a single rack or box, empty your workshop. Sort everything into three piles: keep, repair, and bin. Be honest — that blunt saw you never use? Bin it or repurpose it. Once you know what you're storing, measure your space. Note where light falls, where you stand most, and which tools you reach for daily. Put those within arm's reach. Seasonal or occasional tools can go higher or further back. A simple pencil sketch of your walls and bench will help you plan zones: one for cutting, one for assembly, one for finishing. This prevents the classic mistake of buying storage that doesn't fit your actual workflow.

Wall Racks and Vertical Storage

Walls are your best friend in a small workshop. A French cleat system is cheap, strong and endlessly adaptable. Fix a 45-degree bevel batten to the wall, then make matching holders for chisels, planes, clamps and saws. You can move them around as your collection grows. For screwdrivers and spanners, a magnetic strip is quick and secure. Pegboard is another classic — use hooks and brackets to hang everything from hammers to safety glasses. Just don't overload it; heavy items like bench planes are better on a sturdy shelf or in a drawer. For long tools like levels and straightedges, a simple pair of brackets high on the wall keeps them out of the way.

Shadow foam — foam cut to the shape of each tool — is superb for keeping delicate items like calipers, router bits and carving gouges safe. Trace around the tool, cut with a sharp knife, and peel away the layers. It looks professional and instantly shows if something is missing. For screwdrivers and pliers, a simple cutlery tray works wonders. Label each drawer on the front with a clear label — 'Measuring', 'Screwdrivers', 'Bits and Bobs'.

Labelled Containers and Small Parts

Small parts are the enemy of tidy workshops. Screws, nails, washers, wall plugs, drill bits — they multiply and hide. Use clear stackable containers so you can see what's inside without opening them. Sort by type and size: one box for 4mm screws, another for 5mm, and so on. Label the front and the lid with a marker or label maker. For tiny items like circlips or grub screws, small glass jars or metal tins work well. A classic trick is to screw the lids of jam jars to the underside of a shelf, then twist the jars on. You get instant, visible storage that uses dead space. Avoid mixed tubs of 'assorted screws' — they waste time.

Protecting Tools from Rust and Damp

British weather is no friend to steel tools. Damp sheds and cold garages cause rust overnight. Prevention is easier than cure. Wipe metal surfaces with a lightly oiled rag after every use — camellia oil is traditional for hand tools, but any light machine oil works. Place silica gel sachets in drawers and tool chests, and recharge them in a warm oven every few months. For long-term storage, wrap tools in VCI (vapour corrosion inhibitor) paper or cloth. Keep tools off cold concrete floors — a wooden shelf or rubber mat provides a barrier. If you spot rust, remove it with fine wire wool and oil, then re-protect. A dehumidifier is a worthwhile investment if your workshop is particularly damp.

Keep the System Tidy

Organisation isn't a one-off job. Every few months, spend ten minutes putting things back where they belong. If a tool keeps ending up on the bench, maybe its home isn't convenient — move it. If a container is overflowing, split it. The best system is one you'll actually use. So start small: pick one wall, one drawer, one box. Get it right, then move on. Before long, your workshop will be a pleasure to work in — and you'll wonder how you ever managed without it.
